Question go4astrike : Would Jack Dempseys be okay with African Cichlids?
I have a 180 gallon aquarium with African Cichlids right now. I have a friend looking to find another home for some of his Jack Dempseys. I would like to take them, but I wasn’t sure if they’d be okay with Africans since they are South American. All the fish are relatively the same size. Any adivce?
Answer by nosoop4u246 The aggression isn’t the issue. Jack Dempseys are very aggressive, so in that regard, they would be fine. The problem is that JDs require very different water chemistry than that of the African Cichlids. Africans require very hard, alkaline water and South Americans require very soft, acidic water. The JDs would be miserable in your African tank. Just say no.

Frage von Izzy1281 : What African Cichlids would be good for my aquarium?
I am setting up my 29 Gallon tank and all that is in it now is white sand a heater and a filter. I am going to buy rocks to make caves and tunnels and stuff because i know that african cichlids can be very territorial. Now i really have no clue on what kind to get and how manyto get? i want lots of colors and fish that wont be trying to kill each other. Any tips and pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Answer by misskris Sounds fantastic…..there are literally thousands of species of cichlids, all different in size, colour, habitat and breeding styles. They are the most fascinating of all fish to study as each has their own unique breeding and brooding habits. In many species it is the male that stays behind to protect the nest and the young. In other species the young live in the mouths of the adults…known as mouth brooders. You will have to decide for yourself … bear in mind to replicate their natural habitat as best as you can and talk to other cichlid owners for more information about their personalities.
Oscars will grow quiet large and be quiet aggressive, with stunning black and orange patterns and expressive faces.
The rule in general is that cichlids are territorial so breeding pairs will work best but you must do your research first as some are harem breeders which means the male will have many nesting spots and many females and go from one to the other….others will be monogamous and choose a mate for life. The more research you do the more you will learn about these fascinating fish.
I can only give you a brief outline and prefer you choose your fish for yourself so it is unique to you. Visit a few pet stores and aquariums and watch what they do and make your selection according to your taste and knowledge.
