Question floridasun5 : I want to get more fish. What will live with my african cichlids? I currently have 2 electric yellows, 2 aeri blues and a chinese algae eater in my 55 gallon tank. I'd like to get at least another pair of cichlids, but what others will leave peacefully and in the same water conditions as my africans? What about rams? Please make some suggestions that I can look into. Thanks. Best Answer:
Answer by Jon V
Sevrums are fairly peaceful fish, and Blue Acara as well. I have the yellow labs and yellow peacocks togeather in a 20 while my 55 cycles up for my new cichild community. I have limited knowledge in chichilds which is to say I know they for the most part need hard water, and each species by groups, african/south american/asian have thier own special needs. I don't have that knowledge off the top of my head, but I have read many articles just googling about cichilds in the past, and frequently I have read about sevrums and blue acara as peaceful community cichilds. I'd pass on one other little piece of advice though, if possible, return that chinese algea eater. When that fish gets bigger and older, they are quite known to attach themselves to other fish and doing so, many times it kills the other fish. Make sure you have a good rock/cave set up and your cichilds shouldn't get too territorial if they have good areas to hide in. I can't wait to get mine up and going myself. Wish I had more input but that's all I have at this point. Email 8 in the Corner, that man knowns more about cichilds then anyone else I know. JV

Question alseldom : Will my African cichlids get along with any other fish?
I have a 55 gallon tank. And i have 4 African cichlids they seem to get along fine with my pleco but im thinking its because he was in the tank first. All 4 of my cichlids are under a inch and only about 2 months old. So anyway my question is. Can i get any other fish? or will they be to aggresive?
Answer by loupa_carpathian I’d stick with other african cichlids of equal length if you can find it. Anything larger may attack them. Other bottom feeders are usually left alone by cichlids, like cat fish or pleco’s. So you could try some cat fish, just be aware of how large each particular one could get as many can get well over a foot! Your pleco alone has the capacity to reach 2 feet! There are many beautiful african cichlids, try looking into the many peacock strains as they are generally a rather peacful cichlid. Just avoid large ones and keep in mind how large everyone could get.
Have fun!

Question jixer29 : Will my red taild shark be ok to mix with African cichlids?
i have a red tailed shark and a mollie which are very well paired.
im looking to start a tank with African cichlids. will the red tailed shark and the mollie be ok to mix with African cichlids?
Answer by catxcatxx no. most african cichlids are highly aggressive and needing a higher PH than what the red tailed shark prefers, the shark also being territorial, won’t take kindly to equally territorial cichlids messing with his territory.

Question dhargraves217 : Will African cichlids get big enough to eat feeder fish?
I just purchased some Asst. African cichlids, was going to get two oscars but decided i liked the look of these cichlids better. I was just wondering seems how they will grow from 4-7″ if that would be big enough for them to eat some smaller feeders.
Frage von avalanche91hockey : When will my African Cichlids start breeding?
I have a 60 gallon aquarium with some electric yellows and other african cichlids. I got my fish in October 2007 and it’s June 2008. My fish are about 2 – 4 inches big. Can anybody tell me how long it is going to be before my fish start breeding? Is there usually a certain size or age they reach before reproducing? Thanks
Answer by Eve are you sure you have males and females?
if you have they should have bred by now
or you don’t have enough hidingspots in your tank
unless, you have africans in there which bully your yellows,
i have had successful breedings in my tank
here is documentation on my breeding yellows, with pics included and what to look out for

Do they all grow to approx the same size or are different breeds likely to grow to different sizes?
