Question ASH S : Which is better malawi or tanganyika cichlids?
I have a 100 gallon and was wondering if which type of cichlid was better and easier to take care of? I find malawi quiet aggressive and disease prone any suggestions??

It depends in part on the species. Both require the same water conditions conditions, and can be kept together. Generally with Malawi cichlids you want to stay away from any species in the pseudotropheus genus, as those tend to be extremely aggressive. Malawi cichlids are probably somewhat easier to breed as all of the most popular malawi species are mouth brooders. However, there are some wonderful mouthbrooding Tanganyikans like Cyprichromis. Also, the Neolamprologus Brichardi type fishes, as well as fish of the Julidochromis genus are susbstrate spawners that practice a kind of clan based breeding strategy, in which the young of earlier spawns help the parents defend their younger brothers and sisters. This can lead to them being very successful and a hobbiest achieving large populations with little effort. Neolamprologus Multifaciatus is a Tanganyikan shell dweller that is not particularly aggressive. Just remember to poke holes in the bottom of the shells so the fish don’t accidentally swim into an air pocket if they get panicked. Unless you are doing a species tank, I’d stay away from Tropheus types, as their digestive tracts can’t handle animal protein. What’s important to remember with keeping rift lake cichlids, is that they require a rocky tank with a lot of visual obstructions, as well as enough fish to spread out the aggression so that one particular fish doesn’t get picked on. Malawis are also more likely to hybridize. As for being prone to disease, what water parameters are you maintaining. Rift lake cichlids need to be kept in hard alkaline water. This can be met easily by using crushed coral substrate. Also, a mistake that people seem to make is to assume that as Africans these fish need high water temperatures. They are native to extremely large, and deep lakes. They do best if you keep the temperature in the mid to upper 70s, and will start to deteriorate if the temperature gets above 85 for an extended period of time.

It has to do with alot of things. Mbunas, haps, and peacocks are more popular because of their vibrant colors and relatively small size. They have been on the market long enough that many are farm raised in the far East. This allows them to be sold at much lower prices as well. You also have to take into account political situations. Many of the countries surrounding Lake Tanganyika are war torn, and it can be more difficult to export from that area, driving the price up. When you buy a wild caught fish, you are paying for the divers/fishermen, their equipment, the transporters to the airport, the air cargo, the wholesaler, and so on.
The smaller Tanganyikans are not that popular because of their needs and lack of bright color. Tropheus are not that popular because of their high price and insane aggression. Frontosa are fairly popular due to their nice blue and white stripes, but even they are expensive.
