For african cichlids, how many tablespoons per gallon of aquarium salt should I add?

August 5th, 2011 · 3 Comments

Question Stephanie : For african cichlids, how many tablespoons per gallon of aquarium salt should I add?
I want to make my 16 gallon tank brackish for some baby african cichlids. I need a specific gravity of 1.014. I’m at 1.005 now. I’ve added 1 1/2 tablespoons/gallon of aquarium salt and got that reading. But in general how many tablespoons per gallon should I be adding to reach that s.g.?

Best Answer:

Answer by sue
African cichlids are not brackish and adding salt won’t give the HARD water they need.

The only cichlids that do need brackish water are Etroplus sp which are not African. Please check the requirements of the fish you have and don’t add any more salt.

Question lasvegasnights21 : Should I use sand or gravel for African Cichlids?
Should I use sand or gravel for substrate? I dont know if this helps, but they are African Cichlids. Mbuna to be exact.
electric yellow, yellow lab, red zebra, electric blue, cobalt blue zebra, etc!!!

Sand would be best. But i use gravel, its totaly up to you. I find gravel easy to clean. Are you mimicing there natural environment? Then go with sand. Also gravel can get stuck in there throats (they move the substrate alot) can be harmfull…but i say again it up to you. Best of luck Angel

Should you use aquarium salt with african cichlids?

June 14th, 2011 · 5 Comments

Question lasvegasnights21 : Should you use aquarium salt with african cichlids?
Is it ok to add some aquarium salt to an African cichlid tank? I have about 25 1″-1.5″ African cichlids! (red zebra, kenyi, auratus, lions cove, zebra OB)! They are doing fine, my pet store has salt in their cichlid aquarium, and said it was okay to put in your aquarium, to help eliminate disease. Is this true? Thanks in advance!

You could use salt if you wanted to. I personally don’t use aquarium salt, but if your fish are stressed or sick you might consider it. Just make sure that salt doesn’t interfere with other treatments or that your fish are too sensitive to it.
Cichlid salt is an entirely different matter. Rather than being made of regular salt (sodium chloride), it’s typically a combination of magnesium and calcium salts. Its main use is to buffer the water, which is a good idea if your water is too soft–cichlids prefer hard water.

you could be more specific as african cichlids includes 3″brichardis all the way to 30″ emperor cichlids and lots more in between. albinos are a color morph and could appear in any species of fish or animals, even humans. please be more specific inorder to get useful assistance, otherwise, any suggestions would be wild guesses

lanab has a point. why keep albinos? 35 years ago, albinos were relatively rare as most fishes were wild caught and albinos dont compete well in the wild. all-white fishes were rare and included kissing gouramis, gold severums, pink convicts, and a very small list of others, nowadays, albinos of anything can be found.from the basic reds, blues and greens of yesteryears, bettas are available now in white, yellow, orange, even red-white-and-blue. albino forms of mostly black or grayish fish were more attractive but i fail to see how an albino congo tetra can be prettier than the wild type. sadly, i never see the wild type anymore, just a poor ghost of its former self. albino oscars, albino peacocks, albino angelfish, they’re all pinkish, so what’s attractive about them?

what size of a tank should i upgrade to when my african cichlids grow up?

February 14th, 2011 · 4 Comments

Question Easter Bunny : what size of a tank should i upgrade to when my african cichlids grow up?
i have about 14 african cichlids that will probably be 5-6 in.
2 pitcus catfish left over from when i had a low ph tank AND a tiger barb.
2 frontosas, didnt count them in my cichlid count, want to get 4 more once i get biger tank.
2 bushy nose plecos
2 corry catfish

so what size of a tank should i get?
i have a 50 gallon tank right now

Best Answer:

Answer by Skye
14 x 5 inches
2 x 6 inches
6 frontosas x 12 inches (!!! I would suggest not keeping these in this tank; if you do you’re looking at a 200-gallon aquarium minimum)
2 plecos x 4 inches
2 cory cats x 2 inches (I would add 4 more though; they like to school)

So, as I said, just by looking at your frontosas, you’d need a 200-gallon. If you take my suggestions and take them out, then add 4 cories, you need a 100-gallon minimum. I do not know much about pictus or bushy nose so I am just assuming they will get along with the rest of your fish.

What types of African Cichlids should I put in my tank?

January 13th, 2011 · 3 Comments

Question justamomof3boys : What types of African Cichlids should I put in my tank?
In the past, I had a South American Cichlid tank. I am setting up a new 55 gallon tank – it is cycled and ready to stock – and I would like to try the feisty, bratty, African Cichlids. I think they are beautiful fish. What is a good mix to have in the tank and about how many should I get?
I have holey rocks and caves in the tank along with plants to provide hiding places.

You should keep your Africans only with African cichlids. They can be very aggressive for their size. I would start off with some of the more common African species like you would see at your local chain pet store. For a tank that size, I would do about 5 or 6 cichlids…
