i would say a 75 gallon! at the biggest and at the smallest i would say a 30 gallon i would go with the 75 gallon

Question : How many african cichlids can I hold in a 40 gallon tank?
I currently have a cycled tank, with 2 fake plants, coarse gravel with a layer of crushed coral on top, and big stones arranged to duplicate the lake Malawi environment.

I’m planning on caring for peacock cichlids, how many can my tank hold?

The dimensions are 1y length, 1′ width, and 21″ height.

one cichlids are aggressive fish and to house more fish wit h them they have to be bigger then the cichlids

There is a cool fish store in my area that only does cichlids and I plan to go talk with them. I currently have a 20 with 1 lab yellow, 1 JOHANNI and 1 MBAMBA.
Yeah it is pretty awesome having a specialty store right up the road from me. Currently the lab is the most dominate in the tank. He was there first and is currently the biggest but the johanni (my personal fav) is pretty close to the same size now and has started to challenge the lab now. The poor Mbamba (male) gets picked on a lot I feel bad for him. That’s why I am looking to upgrade bigger tank…more caves hopefully happier fish!

He is really dulled out due to stress but when he is feeling tough he blue and black like a johanni

Mbamba????? oh snap no fair!!!!! No stores here EVER have those. Lucky dawg. The boys are fricking gorgeous. From what I hear they are similar to Red Zebras in temperament.

Yeah the thing is with yellow labs is they will get beat up pretty badly if you plop ‘em in a tank with already established fish. If you put a nice big male in there with three or so girls and let them pick out their turf you should be okay.

That brings you up to four fish, six if you keep the mbamba and johanni. I’d get a Kenyi and something like Socolofi or Acei and you have a seriously impressive range of colors and fishes. Good luck!!

Also, if you ever EVER want Auratus, put them in last. And get a little one.

There are at least 400 species of cichlids endemic to Lake Malawi, so there is no one answer to your question. Most (not all) of the ones we keep in aquaria grow to somewhere between four and eight inches length. Your tank holds about 28 gallons. I’d say a group of about six typical mbuna (Malawi rock-dwelling cichlids) would be comfortable there, along with a big pile of rocks to re-create their preferred habitat.

Question Freddie : how many african cichlids can i have?
i am going to be getting a 55 gallon tank and i wondered how many african cichlids from lake malawi i could have. i have read that they do better in tanks that are a little bit over stoked.
also can someone tell me what african cichlids i should get.

A good size tank for cichlids is a 50 gallon tank. However, if you keep only a couple, then a nice smaller tank is what is known as a 20 gallon long tank. It is about 30 inches long and holds 20 gallons.

A good general plan is 12 to 14 hours of light a day.

… oops sorry I just read that back.. so your 55 gallon tank should be fine for like 8 African Cichlids ? but to over stock maybe 10 ? .. just try it out & see if they are comfortable.. if so, then add another 2 at a time till you think ‘more would not be nice for them.’

I want to make my 16 gallon tank brackish for some baby african cichlids. I need a specific gravity of 1.014. I’m at 1.005 now. I’ve added 1 1/2 tablespoons/gallon of aquarium salt and got that reading. But in general how many tablespoons per gallon should I be adding to reach that s.g.?

African cichlids are not brackish and adding salt won’t give the HARD water they need.

The only cichlids that do need brackish water are Etroplus sp which are not African. Please check the requirements of the fish you have and don’t add any more salt.

60 liter is too small to house lake malawi cichlids. 60 litters of water is roughly 15 US gal. For that size, your tank could probably only hold one of Auratus or one of Maingano or one Electric Blue Johani.
The bigger species such as the red empress needs bigger tank
