here is my 55 gallon with a malawi cichlid community and a sectioned off carnivorous part containing a 7" senegal bichir and a 4" tiger oscar. this is a temporary home for the meat eaters. BTW the oscar banged his head on the glass top at feeding time, has two dings in his head from last night, not HITH disease. tank gets vacuumed and gets a 20% water change every other day because the tank is over stocked Video Bewertung: 5 / 5

As a rule, it’s best to stick to cichlids from one part of the world, so have just a Lake Malawi cichlid tank. However, you can probably mix in certain other cichlids that require the same very alkaline water conditions such as Lake Tanganyika cichlids. The most important aspects to keeping a relatively peaceful cichlid tank are lots of hiding places and territories, enough water and space for each fish (a large tank), and a good sized group of cichlids to offset any aggression. Having many Malawi cichlids seems to moderate their aggression, although there will always be squabbles here and there.

Adding Malawi Cichlids to a tank?

May 21st, 2011 · 2 Comments

Question Kermit : Adding Malawi Cichlids to a tank?
I have a 55 gallon tank and I have one Malawi cichlid that I did not mean to get (a friend was mistreating it and I took it in). It has lived in my tropical freshwater tank for a few days, which was in the 55 gallon. Since I didn’t have many tropical fish, I moved them to a smaller tank. The cichlid is very small right now and is getting better every day. I have decided to make the 55 gallon a Malawi tank, I have wanted to do this for a while. I did a big clean of it after moving fish and I gravel vacuumed. I buffered the pH to about 7.8 and I tested and made sure everything was right for cichlids. The small cichlid is happy in it right now, but when can I add more cichlids? I am hoping to get 2 or 3 more cichlids like him and then one Blood Parrot Cichlid. Can I get them all at once? Will they be okay going in pretty soon (the next few days).

Thanks!

I would only add them a few at a time. Secondly, I would buy the test kit to make sure your tank is cycled after such a big cleanup job you just did as you might have recycled the tank. Fish do best when you add them 1 or 2 at a time over a period of time. This allows them to establish territory and pecking orders in the tank as well as allows the tank to cycle properly if needed without overloading the bio filtration in the tank.

29 Gallon Talk, which Malawi cichlids do you suggest?

Question mmitchel107 : 29 Gallon Talk, which Malawi cichlids do you suggest?
I would like more than one kind of MALAWI cichlid in there but I know certain species can’t be put together. Also, how many should I get? Thanks!

Best Answer:

Answer by blah
none of them. 50 gallons is the minimum for malawis (some need even more). unless, of course, you want your fish uncomfortable and territorial. here are some other african cichlids that will fit, though (don’t use all of them, of course)

Some Malawi cichlids, known as “mbuna,” like lots of rocks in their tanks. Mbuna is a local name meaning “rock-dwelling cichlid.” However, not all Malawi cichilds are mbuna.

Probably the most peaceful Malawi cichlids are the open-water dwellers, known in Lake Malawi as “utaka.” Utaka do not defend territory, so they have less reason for aggression. However, your four-foot tank is really too small for any of the open-water species.

The smallest Malawi cichlids are probably the shell-dwellers, some of which are two inches long or so when adult. (There are also shell-dwellers from Lake Tanganyika and from other places, but they aren’t Malawi cichlids, obviously.)

The most colorful perhaps are the “peacock cichlid” types (genus Aulonocara and genus Protomelas). They are not mbuna, but you could keep one male and several females in a four-foot tank (only the males are brightly-colored).

“Peaceful” and “colorful” tend to be contradictory terms in the fish world, and especially in the cichlid world. Having bright colors serves as a warning and a challenge to other fish, especially other members of the same species and sex. It’s sort of like wearing gang colors in the human world: Don’t do it unless you’re willing to fight to defend your turf. So the brightly-colored fish tend to be the rough and tough ones.

As a first Malawi cichlid, you might like the Yellow Lab, Labidochromis Caeruleus. Both sexes are brightly colored, even as juveniles. This fish does like a lot of rock crevices for shelter. It is fairly aggressive, but no more so than most Malawi cichlids, and it stays small enough that you could have a colony of them in a four-foot tank.

1.50 pounds per fish is quite cheap for African cichlids. If your local shop is selling them for that price, I suspect that the shopkeeper doesn’t know what species they are, either. They could also be hybrids (cross-bred from different species, usually by accident). I don’t recommend getting a hybrid, although a few of them are becoming popular in the hobby.
