Question Vanbar : How many malawi cichlids can you have in a 3 foot tank (by 12×15) and how big do they grow please?
got a new tank and want to put malawi cichlids in it. tank is 3 ft x 1 ft x 15in. how many can i put in there and how big do they grow?
thank you
Answer by Gary C There are at least 400 species of cichlids endemic to Lake Malawi, so there is no one answer to your question. Most (not all) of the ones we keep in aquaria grow to somewhere between four and eight inches length. Your tank holds about 28 gallons. I’d say a group of about six typical mbuna (Malawi rock-dwelling cichlids) would be comfortable there, along with a big pile of rocks to re-create their preferred habitat.

Question awesome. : Do Old World cichlids and New world cichlids have different fighting styles?
I am just so curious because i am researching the behaviour of malawi cichlids compared to that of new world cichlids,so can someone give me a good answer.
Answer by Ghapy They fight like any fish, with their mouths. They have many other behavioural differences though. Different cichlids of the same world can differ too.

Question pnoiz1 : I have a 20gal freshwater tank and I’m going to be keeping Lake Malawi cichlids…?
…and currently, I have a filter that uses two cartridges, one on each side, and when turned on, creates a lot of current and some bubbles. I also have an air stone on inside the tank as well as three live plants. I was wondering if I could take out the air stone and just run the tank without one. Is this possible? Will no oxygen/air stone affect the fish in my tank?
Answer by Mimik The airstone will agitate the surface and increase dissolved oxygen but is not necessary if you don’t stock your tank too heavily.
Keep in mind that Malawian cichlids are very aggresive and territorial. A 20 gallon will only provide room for one or two adult fish. Unless its a 20 long (30×12 inch footprint) in which case you may have room for a trio.
Also mbuna will chew up mos aquarium plants so you may want to stick with just rocks for aquascaping.

Question Freddie : how many african cichlids can i have?
i am going to be getting a 55 gallon tank and i wondered how many african cichlids from lake malawi i could have. i have read that they do better in tanks that are a little bit over stoked.
also can someone tell me what african cichlids i should get.
Answer by Still Charlotte A good size tank for cichlids is a 50 gallon tank. However, if you keep only a couple, then a nice smaller tank is what is known as a 20 gallon long tank. It is about 30 inches long and holds 20 gallons.
A good general plan is 12 to 14 hours of light a day.
… oops sorry I just read that back.. so your 55 gallon tank should be fine for like 8 African Cichlids ? but to over stock maybe 10 ? .. just try it out & see if they are comfortable.. if so, then add another 2 at a time till you think ‘more would not be nice for them.’
…. AND did the answer BELOW really answer anything??

Question Alex C : Are green terror cichlids from the same lakes as African Cichlids? I have a 150 gallon?
fish tank that I Plan on setting up with African cichlids? And I was wondering if the green cichlids and African Cichlids with do well together?
Answer by Robert No, Green terrors are from Ecuador in South America and nearby areas. They will like ph are 6.5 to 7 but will survive at 7.5. Most African Cichlids (all from Lakes Tanganyika and Malawi need pH close to 8 or above. Green Terrors grow faster and get bigger than the African species normally kept as pets, and will attack and likely kill Africans, if you can adapt them to pH that high. Even if you do, they won’t be in tip-top health at pH 7.8 or higher.GT’s are very territorial and better at enforcing it than most Africans most of which are also territorial. It’s not a good mix any way you look at it. even in a 150 gallon tank, the green Terrors will bother the Africans a lot. a friend of mine tried to put a Green Terror in a 55 gallon with 3 Parrot cichlids. he ended up having to put in a tank divider. It’s not a good idea any way you look at it.

Question xslowlybleedingx : I have a Rainbow Shark in a 40 gallon tank I want to put some convicts an some african cichlids in is that ok?
I don’t really know what to put in with this rainbow shark. I’ve had convicts before and I was wondering if it would be ok to put convicts in with the shark and some other african cichlids. Idk any suggestions?
If cichlids aren’t a good idea then what should I get?
Answer by Sarah Return the rainbow shark. They’re best kept in groups of at least six in tanks 120g and larger. They also require different water parameters than the convicts, such as a different pH and water alkalinity.
You can keep a breeding pair of convicts in your 40g, or a group of three. Other cichlids you may be interested in are the keyhole, yellow lab, peacock and/or zebra as they remain small.

I just wanted to know how many African Cichlids i could have in a 20 gallon long aquarium Thanks!
im thinking about getting the smaller species Julidochromis
Well all yall that say 0 my aunt has four in a 20 gallon and they have plenty of room and she has had them for a while
Answer by Gary C Since African cichlids can be anywhere from one inch long to 40 inches long, and some are fairly peaceful while others will kill anything in sight, it’s impossible to answer that question.
What species of African cichlid are you thinking of keeping?
