Question Sam : Can african cichlids, Discus, angelfish, and parrot fish all be in the same tank?
Hi, I am soon going buy a 55 to 75 gallon aquarium and can’t afford the costs of a saltwater tank so instead. I just wanted to know if these beautiful fish can all get along african cichlids, discus, parrot fish, angelfish, fire eel, and oscar. If not then what are some other fish that will get along with those fish. Please answer? THANK YOU ϋ

ok well first the tank size is too small for these fish.. wen they get bigger they are gonna need a bigger tank, i know if you want an oscar put it with a jack dempsey and convicts any of the other fish will mostly die from the oscar wen its bigger. these fish that you want are semi-agressive fish but i dont recommend puttin them together bc theyll most likely die of the oscar a nice set up is some oscars jack dempseys and some albino convicts like wat i have

Q&A: Would Jack Dempseys be okay with African Cichlids?

March 26th, 2011 · 3 Comments

Question go4astrike : Would Jack Dempseys be okay with African Cichlids?
I have a 180 gallon aquarium with African Cichlids right now. I have a friend looking to find another home for some of his Jack Dempseys. I would like to take them, but I wasn’t sure if they’d be okay with Africans since they are South American. All the fish are relatively the same size. Any adivce?

Answer by nosoop4u246
The aggression isn’t the issue. Jack Dempseys are very aggressive, so in that regard, they would be fine. The problem is that JDs require very different water chemistry than that of the African Cichlids. Africans require very hard, alkaline water and South Americans require very soft, acidic water. The JDs would be miserable in your African tank. Just say no.

Q&A: Is a 5 gallon aquarium big enough to hold 3 african cichlids?

February 26th, 2011 · 5 Comments

Question Bird : Is a 5 gallon aquarium big enough to hold 3 african cichlids?
I just bought a five gallon tank and put 3 african cichlids in it. Two of the fish are yellow and the other is a light purple color. Is this tank going to be big enough for these fish to live comfortably in?

Best Answer:

Answer by otlorenz3
Absolutely not! There are some small shell dwellers, but even they wont make it in a tank that size.

The small tanks are bad for aggression and waste products, but also for temperature changes (smaller volume of water changes temperature faster).

You’ll need at least a 20 Long for these fish, and I’m guessing they’re electric yellows and P. acei.

what size of a tank should i upgrade to when my african cichlids grow up?

February 14th, 2011 · 4 Comments

Question Easter Bunny : what size of a tank should i upgrade to when my african cichlids grow up?
i have about 14 african cichlids that will probably be 5-6 in.
2 pitcus catfish left over from when i had a low ph tank AND a tiger barb.
2 frontosas, didnt count them in my cichlid count, want to get 4 more once i get biger tank.
2 bushy nose plecos
2 corry catfish

so what size of a tank should i get?
i have a 50 gallon tank right now

Best Answer:

Answer by Skye
14 x 5 inches
2 x 6 inches
6 frontosas x 12 inches (!!! I would suggest not keeping these in this tank; if you do you’re looking at a 200-gallon aquarium minimum)
2 plecos x 4 inches
2 cory cats x 2 inches (I would add 4 more though; they like to school)

So, as I said, just by looking at your frontosas, you’d need a 200-gallon. If you take my suggestions and take them out, then add 4 cories, you need a 100-gallon minimum. I do not know much about pictus or bushy nose so I am just assuming they will get along with the rest of your fish.

Answer by fl_lopez
I used to raise pseudotropheus demasoni which is from Lake Malawi I found that having more than a few males in the tank helped to encourage mating, When I began I had 4 females and two males and nothing, then I added 20 more fish (100 gallon aquarium) and within a year I had 4 55 gallon aquariums full of fish (actually overstocked.)

Question Jon : Can african cichlids from lake Malawi and Egyptian moothbrooder be in the same aquarium with angelfish?
And also can you put the cichlids in the same aquarium with tiger barbs
Yea thanks for the info about the angelfish I have a 23 gallon aquarium and the cichlids are rather small in size so I think I’m gona try the tiger barbs

Answer by 8 In the corner
No, it is not a good idea to put Africans with angelfish. The angels are a slow moving, easy target for any kind of aggression from the Africans. Angels are South American and have different needs than the Africans. The Africans are a robust, busy fish that would not only stress the angels highly, they would pick at their long fins and feelers, eventually killing them.

Tiger barbs are fast moving fish that would not be in danger from the cichlids as long as they stayed in the upper levels of the tank where the cichlids do not typically spend much time. If you have a large tank with lots of room at the top, I see no problems with mixing the tigers with the Africans.

How often should I feed my three african cichlids?

Frage von Chris : How often should I feed my three african cichlids?
I have just bought 3 african cichlids and house them in a 29 gallon aquarium. I have the HBH sinking pellet food. How often should I feed these guys?

Answer by Matthew
With cichlids, once maybe twice a day, and only feed them what they eat in about 30 seconds, as they will eat A LOT if you let them. Be sure to clean out the leftover food afterwards. And they like a little meat too, brine shrimp once a week would be a nice treat!

When will my African Cichlids start breeding?

December 8th, 2010 · No Comments

Frage von avalanche91hockey : When will my African Cichlids start breeding?
I have a 60 gallon aquarium with some electric yellows and other african cichlids. I got my fish in October 2007 and it’s June 2008. My fish are about 2 – 4 inches big. Can anybody tell me how long it is going to be before my fish start breeding? Is there usually a certain size or age they reach before reproducing? Thanks

Beste Antwort:

Answer by Eve
are you sure you have males and females?
if you have they should have bred by now
or you don’t have enough hidingspots in your tank
unless, you have africans in there which bully your yellows,
i have had successful breedings in my tank
here is documentation on my breeding yellows, with pics included and what to look out for

How many African Cichlids can I keep in a 29 gallon tank?

November 16th, 2010 · 2 Comments

Frage von I Love My Doggies <3 : How many African Cichlids can I keep in a 29 gallon tank?
I have a 29 gallon aquarium and my brother is giving me some of his African Cichlids to put in it. I was just wondering how many can I have in a 29 gallon tank. Thanks.
The fish I am getting are juveniles that are 1″- 2″ and adults which are approx 3″. So I was thinking that 10 fish would be a good number considering Cichlids are very territorial.

When I first read the question, I could have sworn I saw “How many African Children can I fit into a 29 gallon tank…”

I have always gone by the 1 inch per gallon rule. You can safely have 29 inches of fish within the tank. There are obvious exceptions to this: feeder fish, low oxygen fish, etc. Divide 29 by the average length of the fish, and you’ll have your answer.
