Q&A: Can african cichlids and convicts breed?

January 5th, 2011 · No Comments

Frage von Korey : Can african cichlids and convicts breed?
My mom had two cichlids and I was only sure about one. I knew he was a convict. My mom says the other one was an african cichlid. They ended up having babies. Could this cichlid really be an african cichlid and breed with convicts? Or Was this a convict who’s stripes didn’t show?

it could be possible but unlikely because africans don’t take kindly to convicts. there are africans that have markings similar to convicts though

I have three African cichlids in a 30gal tank but they are all pretty small. The biggest one is 3in.

Other ciclids. But there are several compatibility charts out there. Just do a web search. Remember to have an inch of fish for every gal. 30 gal = 30 in of fish

Chinese algae eater with malawi cichlids?

Frage von Mr Snugglesโ„ข : Chinese algae eater with malawi cichlids?
Can you have a chinese algae eater with malawi cichlids?

Beste Antwort:

Answer by Jack the Wong
it’s definitely a yes

Although I haven’t experienced that, but i’ve read everywhere that is possible, not much risk.

In my big tank,
i have about 12 African cichlids (mbuna), with a red tail shark, 5 clown loaches, 3 yoyos.
My cichlids never bothered any non-cichlids. Chinese algae-eater should be stronger than these loaches too.

But my tank is big, with tons of hidings places, everywhere. If you have that, then there’s nothing to worry at all.

Hope this helps.

Frage von Kip R : What fish can live with african cichlids and their tank requirements?
african cichlids need certain tank requirements like a tablespoon of rift lake salt per 5 gallons, 75-85 degree water and a strong filter. they are agressive too.
i was wondering what types fish can live safely with them.
the ph is 7.8 – 8.2, it changes sometimes.
a pet store near me said i could keep blood parrot/jellybean/bubblegum cichlids with them because they are hardy and will be okay in those condistions. is this true?

how to determine the sex of my african cichlids?

Frage von Patsfan34 : how to determine the sex of my african cichlids?
I have 11 african cichlids and I was wondering how can I tell the gals from the guys? I have only had them for about a month and they are doing well, they have plenty of caves but there is one who seems to be a real bully. However, he does get challenged by only one other, but that one gets along with the rest. I just wanna know hw to tell the sexes.

Beste Antwort:

Answer by roach
every cichlid has different features. some are really hard to tell while others are pretty simple. many male mouthbrooder cichlids will have spots called “eggspots on” the anal fin. usually males are more colorful, but this again depends on species. males usually have longer fins.

Perhaps they don’t particularly eat Mollies, try smaller fish like Guppies or something.

Can you put malawi cichlids with angelifish and parrot fish since they are related?

December 6th, 2010 · 2 Comments

Frage von LYNN : Can you put malawi cichlids with angelifish and parrot fish since they are related?

Beste Antwort:

Answer by Ghapy
Actually, they are not related at all – they just share certain characteristics that define them as ‘cichlids’. Malawi cichlids evolved completely independent from the cichlids of any other region, and the biotope is highly unique, nothing like the soft, planted, riverine waters of Angel fish, or the labratory aquariums of the hybrid parrot cichlid.

Malawi cichlids themselves comprise a group of fish ranging from a couple of inches to a nearly a couple of feet long and – from rock dwelling algae grazers to open water predators, from mild to hostile, and can’t be clumped together as one generalization. Some might ‘work out’ with the other two types, others may kill them, but it’s never an ideal mix.
