My sister just gave me 3 cichlids. I don’t know what kind they are and I don’t know how to take care of them. Do they need a higher ph then most fish? what should the temperature be at? and what can they eat other then cichlid flakes? Any help would be greatful.

Question Nicolette : African Cichlids?
I want to start a cichlid tank in my 75 gallon. never had em before. any advice? Like do they require more work than community fish, how many should i get, and do they all have to be african, and what do they need?
And why the weekly water changes or whatever? are they necessary? Are you supposed to do that with community cuz i dont?
Do they have to be from the same lake in Africa? Like they cant be from two different African Lakes?

how many african cichlids can i have?

Question Freddie : how many african cichlids can i have?
i am going to be getting a 55 gallon tank and i wondered how many african cichlids from lake malawi i could have. i have read that they do better in tanks that are a little bit over stoked.
also can someone tell me what african cichlids i should get.

A good size tank for cichlids is a 50 gallon tank. However, if you keep only a couple, then a nice smaller tank is what is known as a 20 gallon long tank. It is about 30 inches long and holds 20 gallons.

A good general plan is 12 to 14 hours of light a day.

… oops sorry I just read that back.. so your 55 gallon tank should be fine for like 8 African Cichlids ? but to over stock maybe 10 ? .. just try it out & see if they are comfortable.. if so, then add another 2 at a time till you think ‘more would not be nice for them.’

…. AND did the answer BELOW really answer anything??

Q&A: has anyone ever kept malawi cichlids and clown loach together?

Question Si : has anyone ever kept malawi cichlids and clown loach together?
i have an overstocked tank and don’t want to buy three tanks! they all get on fine and have grown up together

Most Malawi cichlids would be far to aggressive to keep with a clown loach. I’m not saying it cannot be done, but it would definitely be risky. I do not suggest it but if one was to try I would make sure to keep a close eye out for the safety of the clown loach.

12 hours is great. If you’d like, you can shorten it to 8-10 hours during the winter.
