Q&A: How many Malawi Cichlids in a 40gallon?

March 4, 2012 · No Comments

Question Tierra : How many Malawi Cichlids in a 40gallon?
How many can live in a 40 gallon tank?
they are mbuna.
There is a cool fish store in my area that only does cichlids and I plan to go talk with them. I currently have a 20 with 1 lab yellow, 1 JOHANNI and 1 MBAMBA.
Yeah it is pretty awesome having a specialty store right up the road from me. Currently the lab is the most dominate in the tank. He was there first and is currently the biggest but the johanni (my personal fav) is pretty close to the same size now and has started to challenge the lab now. The poor Mbamba (male) gets picked on a lot I feel bad for him. That’s why I am looking to upgrade bigger tank…more caves hopefully happier fish!
Actually I don’t believe I have a mbamba… here is the pic do you know what I have here? http://rachellepics.shutterfly.com/521
He is really dulled out due to stress but when he is feeling tough he blue and black like a johanni

Answer by Paco
Mbamba????? oh snap no fair!!!!! No stores here EVER have those. Lucky dawg. The boys are fricking gorgeous. From what I hear they are similar to Red Zebras in temperament.

Yeah the thing is with yellow labs is they will get beat up pretty badly if you plop ‘em in a tank with already established fish. If you put a nice big male in there with three or so girls and let them pick out their turf you should be okay.

That brings you up to four fish, six if you keep the mbamba and johanni. I’d get a Kenyi and something like Socolofi or Acei and you have a seriously impressive range of colors and fishes. Good luck!!

Also, if you ever EVER want Auratus, put them in last. And get a little one.

Cichlids Care - Reducing Your Cichlids' Aggression

February 12, 2012 · No Comments

Cichlids Care – Lowering Your Cichlids' Aggression

Cichlids , especially the males, can be difficult to care for as they can be fiercely aggressive when breeding or protecting their off-springs. The trick in caring for cichlids is to minimize their aggression as considerably as feasible by creating straightforward adjustments in tank size and aquascaping.

Firstly, you need a decent sized tank in order to preserve cichlids. For starters, it is very advised that you get at least a 20 gallon tank. Cichlids are extremely territorial creatures and will most likely carve out an location for themselves. If you have a very modest tank, there is a opportunity that they will merely take over the whole tank…which will at some point lead to particular deaths! Hence, make sure that you have a sufficiently significant tank for them to live in – 20 gallon minimum!

The next essential point right here is aquascaping. Having a large tank is only the beginning it is not adequate to manage their aggression.

A bare tank, no matter how large, can only hold a handful of cichlids simply because they will still try to take over the whole tank! The reason here is aquascaping.

Cichlids, like most animals, utilizes all-natural objects in their surroundings to define their territory. Hence, you need to generate "zones" for them to live in so that they will not fight over the exact same territory.

One more essential aspect in aquascaping is to generate sufficient "hiding locations". This "hiding places" could be some thing like plants, caves, empty shells or even rockworks. These "hiding areas" is for your cichlids to hide when they become exhausted from chasing each and every other about in the open.

If you are into breeding cichlids, "hiding areas" are vital as they double-up as breeding websites for them to lay their eggs.

By generating the above adjustments, you may discover that cichlids are actually fairly effortless to care for and sustain. A lot of cichlids aggression stems from the need to have their own territory – either for hiding purposes or breeding purposes. Discover how you can care for cichlids by understanding the various elements of cichlids care now!

My Malawi cichlids got fry in her mouth?

February 12, 2012 · 2 Comments

Question : My Malawi cichlids got fry in her mouth?
How long will she keep them in her mouth it has been over 5 weeks now and she hasnt released them or eaten in that time. Im worried she wont survive much longer? We have caves for her to go in. Should I be worried?
Im not sure what type she is but she is yellow with black and white stripes from head to tail?? She definately has fry in her mouth I can see them when she opens her mouth. Her colour has really faded the past 2 days she is very pale thats why Im worried..

Best Answer:

Answer by PeeTee
No worries. You may never see her eating, but she’ll be OK. Get a small flashlight and start looking around in the crevasses and tiny hiding places in the tank. Also think about filter intakes that might “inhale” the fry. Sponge prefilters might help.

Is it ok to keep stingrays with African cichlids?

February 5, 2012 · 2 Comments

Question PAC : Is it ok to keep stingrays with African cichlids?
Hi, wanted to know if it was ok to keep stingrays with African cichlids?

My tank is 6x2x2; I only have 10 Malawi Cichlids (2-3 inches) in the tank.

I have 2 external filters which are very good.

Best Answer:

Answer by Mickey P.
No, fresh water stingrays come from a low PH, around the 6.0 -7.0 range. The stingrays that live in the high PH are salt water and either way you don’t have a tank big enough to keep them. Both freshwater and saltwater rays need at least a 200 gallon tank wider than longer and a soft sand or bare bottom. Plus they will eat your fish. Rays are species only fish, not mixers. Sorry

Answer by Deren
Hiya,

All mbuna are compatible but it depends on your tank size, for example a blue moori needs a larger tank than species such as yellow labs. You need a large tank that is well stocked and hardscaped to reduce aggression.
